A place, whether fact or fiction, can seem very real in our minds, if the portrayal of it is descriptive and visual enough for our imagination to ‘build it’.
When reading a book, the word ‘forest’ for example, can instantly create an image in our mind – where even elements such as light, time of day and specific colours, are imagined by the inspiration of words combined with our imagination.
A place may be changed over time, whether physically or in fact mentally, it can evolve and innovate; this has become a source of research both visually and contextually.

'Realistic versus Imaginative depictions of place: Does reality matter more than fantasy?'
